Database: U.S. school shootings since December 2012

There has been nearly one school shooting every week since the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut in which 20 children and six adults were fatally shot, with schools in more than 30 states experiencing some kind of firearm-related incident on campus over the past year and a half.

The Desk has compiled a list of 80 campus-related shootings since the Newtown massacre. The data is compiled from various sources, including local and national media reports as well as a list maintained by the advocacy website Everytown.org. The database is searchable and can be sorted by date, city state, number of casualties/fatalities and type of school involved. Click here for an explanation of listed events and terms used.

Explanation of terms used • “Casualties” refers to number of individuals who were injured in the incident, including suspected or confirmed shooters • “Fatalities” refers to the number of individuals fatally shot as a result of a campus shooting, including suspected or confirmed shooters • “Unknown” refers to a suspected or confirmed shooter who has not been identified or apprehended by police • “Unidentified” refers to a suspected or confirmed shooter who was in the custody of police, but whose identity was not released to the public.

Explanation of events listed • Incidents are listed in this database when a firearm is discharged on the campus of an college, university, elementary, middle or high school, including public, private and alternative schools • A “campus-related shooting” includes an event in which a firearm is discharged on the main grounds of a school, adjacent on-campus faculty, administrative or student buildings, gymnasiums, recreational facilities, dormitories or parking lots • Incidents include activities that would warrant a police response, such as a domestic disturbances, assaults, actual or attempted suicides, homicides/murders or accidental shootings • Incidents that involve the discharge of a firearm adjacent to or otherwise off school grounds, including incidents that occur on board school buses as they are en route to or from a campus, are not included.
